After decades in the workforce, raising families and running their households, retirees have amassed a lot of wisdom. They’ve learned the value of patience and persistence.

Kids in elementary school haven’t personally gained such wisdom. And they may not have some caring older adults in their lives to provide them some guidance.

In Fort Dodge, the Foster Grandparents program can fill in that gap, linking youngsters with those who just may have some gray in their hair.

That program is for people age 55 and older who like to work with younger students. The Foster Grandparents go into local schools and work one-on-one with students who may need a little extra help. The program has been active in Iowa since 1973.

Right now, there are plenty of young people in Fort Dodge who could use the mentoring of a Foster Grandparent. However, there isn’t nearly enough Foster Grandparents to meet the demand. There are about 14 adults in the program right now.

Therefore, the Foster Grandparents program is actively recruiting right now.

Prospective Foster Grandparents receive training before going into the schools and continue monthly training after that. They work between five and 40 hours a week.

All of the Foster Grandparents are reimbursed for meals and travel expenses, and those that meet income eligibility rules can get a stipend.

We encourage people to consider being a Foster Grandparent. Yes, we know that there can be some tough, frustrating days working with children. But the rewards of the work will be tremendous. Foster Grandparents will get to see young people become more mature in their behavior. They will see kids start reading with ease and working through math problems without getting frustrated. And the Foster Grandparents will know that they had something to do with those transitions. They will know that they are helping to shape the future.
