Fundraising under way for $4.2 million project

The word cancer may be the most terrifying thing anyone can hear their doctor say.

The good news is that treatment of the disease gets a little bit better every year. Even cancers that were once automatic death sentences can now be treated and even cured.

UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center has taken the next step to provide even better cancer care by acquiring a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. It is kind of an initimidating looking machine that seems like it came from a science fiction movie. But this machine can help cancer patients in ways that weren’t possible before.

Thanks to the new linear accelerator, patients will require fewer radiation treatments. Those treatments will be more precisely targeted so that the cancer cells are killed and the patients are exposed to less radiation.

It probably goes without saying that this thing did not come cheap. The linear accelerator and the vault that it sits in cost about $4.2 million.

The Trinity Foundation has committed to providing $3.5 million to pay for the machine and vault project. It is conducting a fundraising campaign called Radiating Hope to generate the needed money.

To donate, visit www.unitypoint.org/fortdodge/online-donation or call (515) 574-6509.

We encourage everyone to donate to this effort. Even a small donation will ensure that the most up-to-date cancer treatment is available to everyone in our community who needs it.
