Volunteer firefighters answer the call again

Badger, Farnhamville crews step up to deliver food to seniors

The volunteer firefighters of Badger and Farnhamville are on call to help the people of their communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Now, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, they are expanding their services beyond the fire and rescue calls that are the primary mission of any fire department.

The volunteers of both departments are now offering to go out and get groceries and any other essential supplies for the senior citizens of their communities, thus averting the need for the older people to go into stores and potentially get infected by the coronavirus.

These are men and women with jobs to do and families to care for who have added the extra tasks, not to mention stress, of being a volunteer firefighter to their lives. And yet they have decided to add one more thing to their already jam-packed lives in order to provide a service to their older friends and neighbors. That says a lot about the character of volunteer firefighters.

To get assistance with groceries from the Farnhamville firefighters, call Al Jacobson at (515) 544-3780 or Cheryl Pearson at (515) 544-3665.

In the Badger area, call the firehouse at (515) 545-3125 or Mayor Chris Wendell at (515) 545-4444.

We thank these volunteer firefighters for taking on another way of serving their communities during an unprecedented situation. It’s just another reason why they are worthy of respect and admiration.
