Fort Dodge police get a helping hand

Serving Our Servants provides officers with new formal hats

There are certain formal events where police officers wear uniforms that are dressier than their normal work attire. When those occasions take place Fort Dodge police will now have brand new dress hats thanks to the efforts of a local group.

Serving Our Servants — a Christian-centered group of residents dedicated to showing public servants appreciation — has made the new hats a reality for local officers. The classic hats are flared at the top with a shiny sun visor. Each features a miniature replica of the officer’s badge.

While this type of headwear is an excellent choice for events such as funerals, presentations or public appearances, it is no longer a part of the standard uniform issued to officers. Obtaining a hat of this type for every officer in the department is an expensive proposition that isn’t in its budget. The SOS group stepped up to help solve that problem.

The Rev. Al Henderson, founder of SOS, said just over $5,000 was needed to purchase the hats. His group raised the money to pay for the hats in about a month. He said community support for the project was exceptionally strong. For anyone interested in joining SOS in its efforts or making a donation, Henderson can be reached at 955-7285.

The Messenger applauds this demonstration by SOS and the community at large of support for our Police Department. Our law enforcement officers work hard to keep our town safe. Their dedication to fulfilling their mission is outstanding. They deserve uniforms for special occasions that allow them to show their pride in this important work. These new hats are an excellent upgrade.
