Warden Plaza tours prove huge success

The eight-story Warden Plaza was once a major downtown Fort Dodge business property. Sadly, that once stately building has fallen into sad repair in the decade since it last was used commercially.

Area residents recently had an opportunity to explore the 91-year-old building thanks to tours conducted to raise money to support a fireworks display during the Independence Day holiday celebrations. An impressive $16, 268 was raised.

The turnout was amazing. More than 3,200 people had a chance to see portions of that building and the adjacent Wahkonsa Annex. They were able to get a sense of what the structure was like in its prime while supporting a worthy community holiday project.

The Messenger applauds the members of the Fort Dodge Fireworks Committee for conceiving of this creative fundraising endeavor. We also salute those members of the Fort Dodge Young Professionals who volunteered to be tour guides.

Hopefully, this historic building will have a new life if plans to renovate it succeed. In August, the Fort Dodge City Council approved a preliminary memorandum of understanding with KDG LLC, with the hope of bringing both apartments and commercial development to the complex.

KDG will commit to at least $30 million in the redevelopment, according to the agreement. Once final approvals and agreements are signed, construction must be completed within 24 months.

Bringing the Warden Plaza back to life is a worthy undertaking that would benefit downtown Fort Dodge greatly.
