Effort to close Gitmo is a mistake

President Barack Obama has become so desperate to keep his pledge to close the U.S. detainment center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that he is exploring every option to ship terrorists imprisoned there elsewhere, according to an Associated Press report.

White House officials are “scrambling to release as many prisoners as possible,” the AP reported.

Most members of Congress are on record in opposition to the idea. Clearly, Obama is willing to risk national security to fulfill his promise.

Whatever happens, however, Congress should ensure “Gitmo” stays open. Clearly, we will need somewhere outside the United States to imprison captured terrorists in the future. Consequently, closing this detainment center makes no sense. If it were to be shut down, our government would have to recreate it somewhere else. That would be costly and pointless.
