Area heroes deserve praise

People whose positive actions go far beyond the ordinary warrant particular praise. That’s why the American Red Cross launched what has become an annual tribute to individuals who accomplish the remarkable.

At the Heroes of the Heartland event, Tuesday at Willow Ridge Restaurant and Golf Course, individuals were singled out for recognition as area heroes. This event was a combination recognition luncheon for the honorees and fundraiser for the American Red Cross, Greater Northwest Iowa Area.

This year’s honorees are:

Jamie Buenting,

Joel Lizer,

Gus Macke,

Krissy Macke and

Becky Morris

Jamie Buenting, a Rockwell City police officer, was recognized posthumously. He was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 13, 2013. The award pays tribute to that heroic service.

Joel Lizer, a sergeant with the Fort Dodge Police Department, acted quickly when faced with a life-threatening situation and rescued a local family from a burning home.

Gus Macke and his daughter-in-law, Krissy Macke, provided housing for the survivors of a deadly home fire in Lake City and launched a campaign to get them back on their feet.

Becky Morris was recognized for her prompt action in an emergency situation. She administered CPR to a collapsed victim.

Full details of each awardee’s selfless contributions were published in a special supplement included in Tuesday’s edition of The Messenger.

The Messenger congratulates the award recipients and applauds the Red Cross for sponsoring this excellent awards program.
