Michael Hewitt

Michael "Mike" Hewitt, 71, passed away following a brief battle with cancer on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge, IA.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Gunderson Funeral Home, Fort Dodge. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Mike was born August 4, 1955, in Jefferson, Iowa, to Robert and Audry (Sigler) Hewitt. On January 3, 1976, he was united in marriage to Julie DeBakey. Together, they built a life centered around family, hard work, and the simple joys of being together.

Mike was a bricklayer by trade and took great pride in his work. He owned and operated Mike Hewitt Construction, Inc., from which he retired in 2013. His talents went far beyond his profession. Mike built the family home on their acreage and could often be found building, fabricating, fixing, or tinkering with something. He had a natural ability to figure out how things worked and enjoyed putting his hands to work creating something new.

A true outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially pheasant hunting. Those who knew him well knew that when it came to fishing for walleye, Mike was a true "walleye snob." Some of his favorite memories were made taking his children fishing in Canada and spending time together on the acreage, where he also enjoyed having the kids shoot clay pigeons.

Mike had a love for motorcycles and enjoyed riding the countryside, as well as making trips to Sturgis, South Dakota. He also gave of his time to his community as a volunteer firefighter with the Barnum Fire Department.

While Mike enjoyed his many hobbies and interests, what mattered most to him was his family. He especially cherished his granddaughter and treasured the time he was able to spend with her. Family was at the heart of Mike's life, and he will be remembered for the many memories, adventures, and moments he shared with those he loved.

Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years, Julie Hewitt; his children, Christopher (Julie) Hewitt of Grimes, Iowa, Corey Hewitt of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Carly (David) Johnson of Van Meter, Iowa; and his granddaughter, Astrid Hewitt; brothers, Monte (DeAnn) Hewitt, of Fort Dodge, Mitch (Laura) Hewitt of Des Moines; brother-in-law George DeBakey of West Des Moines; as well as nephews, nieces, cousins, and many other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Audry Hewitt; his father and mother-in-law, George (Marjorie) DeBakey; stepmother, Connie Hewitt and his brother Jeff Hewitt.

Memorials may be directed to the family for their discretion.
