Kenneth W. Cunningham, a dedicated veteran, accomplished civil servant, and beloved family man, passed away on September 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born July 31, 1952 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Manford and Bonnie Cunningham, he graduated in 1970 and joined the United States Air Force. He leaves behind a profound legacy of honor, integrity, and 41 years of exemplary federal service to the United States.
Ken enlisted in the Air Force in September 1970. His military career took him around the globe, with assignments at Seymour-Johnson AFB, U-Tapao Air Field in Thailand, Williams AFB, Clark Air Base in the Philippines, Davis-Monthan AFB, Osan AB in the Republic of Korea, Hickam AFB, and Patrick AFB. After 20 years of active duty service he retired as a Master Sergeant in October 1990.
Following his military retirement, Ken continued his commitment to national defense in the civilian sector. He initially worked as an Air Force contractor before entering Federal Civilian Service with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). Over a distinguished career, he held numerous leadership roles across the country, including positions in Florida, Colorado, and Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting, graduating Cum Laude from Hawaii Pacific College. He ultimately retired from his civil service career as the Chief of the Audit Readiness & Accounting Branch at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia, capping off over four decades of service to the Department of Defense. The family eventually settled in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area, where Ken enjoyed his retirement surrounded by the community he served so well. Beyond his distinguished professional achievements, Ken was a devoted husband and father. Those left behind to cherish his memory include his wife, Leony; his sons, Sterling (Jennifer) Asingua, Kenny (Tina) Cunningham, and Carl Cunningham; his grandchildren, Nico and Lyla Asingua; brother, Bill (Diane) Cunningham of Olathe, Kansas; sister, Jean (Bruce) Warg of Fort Dodge, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Roberto Asingua and Jose Asingua of the Philippines; and lots of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Manford and Bonnie Cunningham; brother, Paul Cunningham; and son, Amando Pacultad. Ken will be remembered by his family, friends, and former colleagues as a man of meticulous excellence, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication.
