Joseph P. Mahan
Joseph P. “Joe” Mahan, 78, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt with his daughter at his side.
Joseph was born September 10, 1947, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Paul and Margaret (Tindall) Mahan. He grew up on the family farm south of Graettinger and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1966. Joe enlisted in the United States Army and served his country being stationed in Germany. Following his discharge in November of 1969 he returned to the family farm. Joe was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Meridee “Jodi” Molan on October 8, 1971, in Vermillion, South Dakota. The couple started their life together in Polk City where Joe attended Area 11 College and made the Dean’s list. They then lived in Kansas City and later Fort Dodge where he worked for Gibbs-Cook, later Ziegler for thirty-nine years. In 1999, he and Jodi moved to Humboldt. In retirement, Joe loved to help Mike Jacobson with farming. He and Jodi traveled the United States extensively, something they had always planned to do. He had an extensive toy tractor collection, enjoyed auctions, the Chicago Bears, time spent at his hobby shed at his daughter’s acreage and attending his grandson Joey’s activities.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Shelly Mahan (Chuck Wernett) of Badger, grandson Joey, his sister Mary Kay Baier of Kenyon, Minnesota, and brothers, Bob (Bev) Mahan of Emmetsburg, Edwin Mahan of Des Moines and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Meridee “Jodi,” his parents, and brothers Mark and Alan.
