Mickie Messerly, daughter of Charles and Delores (Wheaton) Spencer, was born August 18, 1941, in Fort Dodge. Mickie graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1959. Shortly after high school graduation, Mickie began work in the office of what was then Celotex, where she met Bill Messerly, her husband of 65 years.
Bill and Mickie were married on December 5, 1959, in Blue Earth Minnesota. They made their home in the Fort Dodge area until 1982, when they moved to Janesville, Wisconsin. After 17 years in Wisconsin, Bill and Mickie retired and returned to Fort Dodge to live in Bill’s family home.
Mickie was known for her strength, spice, and sass! Most of her life was focused on raising her children yet found time to work part-time in various roles. After relocating to Wisconsin, Mickie started working for LeMans Corporation in their shipping department. She and Bill enjoyed their “empty nest,” going to professional football games, traveling around the country, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean. While she and Bill enjoyed many adventures, Mickie also was able to take “girls’ trips” with her daughters to New York City in 2001 and London in 2011. Her last vacation was to visit her daughter and son-in-law in Georgia in August 2025. After her first retirement, Mickie stayed very busy raising Kadi, driving for Dart, and enjoying time in the pool with her friends. Most recently, you would find Mickie playing bean bag baseball with her Woodlands traveling team and spending time with her kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren. In December, she achieved her last goals, walking Kadi down the aisle and holding Hudson, her youngest great-grandson.
Mickie was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Mickie is survived by her children: Robert (Donna) Messerly of Spokane, Washington; Mike (Lorie) Messerly of Altoona, Iowa; Cindy (Tim) Wildt of Gainesville, Georgia; Jackie (Rich) Pullen of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Kadi (Carson) Fulcher of West Des Moines, Iowa. Seven grandchildren, Amy and Kaylee Messerly, Adam Dutcher, Sierra (Tyler) Sturman, Joel (Jennifer) Pullen, Kaitlyn (Austin) Burgett and Jeff (Lisa) Pullen all in Iowa. Four step-grandchildren, Lindsey (Devon) Lacina, Luke (Julie) Brandel, Lance (Nichole) Brandel and Lee (Jordan) Brandel. Great-grandchildren, Brody and Ryker, Clayton and Alaina, Louie, Finlee and Gracie, Charlie and Hudson, Grady, Cale, Ayana, Knox, Alyx, Deegan, Winney and Brycen. Mickie’s surviving brothers are Chuck Spencer, Denny (Paula) Spencer and Randy (Brenda) Spencer and sister-in-law Judy (Steve) Powers, and several nieces and nephews.
Mickie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Messerly, her parents, three brothers, Gary, Ricky and Greg, and great-granddaughter, Emma.
Mickie’s family will be forever grateful for the loving care, comfort and friendship provided by Woodlands Senior Living and Suncrest Hospice during her last year, and the love and support of her lifelong friends and neighbors in Fort Dodge.
Memorials may be directed to the family to donate on behalf of Mickie.
