Ron Newsum
Ron Newsum, age 87, of Fort Dodge, Iowa passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026, following a short illness.
Ron was born on September 12, 1938. He attended St. Edmond High School and went on to enjoy a long and successful career with Farm Bureau Financial Services, where he was known for his dedication, integrity, and strong work ethic.
Ron was deeply committed to honoring those who served our country. He was a founder of the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight, established in 2010. Through his leadership and vision, the program has taken more than 2,000 veterans to Washington D.C., allowing them to visit and reflect at the nation’s war memorials – an accomplishment that brought Ron great pride.
A veteran himself, Ron served in the Iowa Air National Guard and remained actively involved in supporting patriotic and community initiatives throughout his life. Among these was Old Glory on the River, a project featuring an American flag flying from a pole on a pier in the middle of the Des Moines River, symbolizing his enduring love for country and community.
Ron was united in marriage to Joan Swenson on January 11, 1991. They raised their family of two children, Greg and Brian, in Fort Dodge. Ron and Joan would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this coming Sunday, a testament to their lifelong devotion and partnership.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Lillian Hentges, and two sons, Gregory Allen Newsum and Brian Dean Newsum. He is survived by his wife Joan and his faithful companion Brianna.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ron will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Burial with Military Honors conducted by the VFW Post #1856 and Iowa National Guard will follow at North Lawn Cemetery. Following burial, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Corpus Christi Center. Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
