David “Jake” Jakeman Sr.

David “Jake” Jakeman Sr., 80, of Fort Dodge, died unexpectedly at his home on December 11, 2025.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, December 18, 2025, with a funeral service to follow at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Interment and military honors will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

David William Jakeman, was born October 22, 1945, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, son of Clifford and Frances (Williams) Jakeman. He grew up on the family farm near Callender along with his two brothers. He graduated from Prairie Community High School in 1963. David served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969. During his time in service he was awarded the Bronze Star medal with “V” device for his valorous actions while serving as a team leader with Company A, 4th Battalion. He was also awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal.

Following his service, he returned to Fort Dodge and was employed with Iowa Beef Production and after its closure worked various jobs. He was married to Rita Lara and the couple was blessed with their son David Jakeman Jr. The couple later divorced.

Jake was an avid Iowa State Fan and football season ticket holder for many years. He was also a Chicago Cubs fan and would often listen to the Cubs game on the radio parked at Phinney Park. He was known for taking long drives in the country to enjoy the views, socialize with his friends at local establishments, and a huge racing fan, taking annual trips to Knoxville to watch sprint car races.

Survivors include his son David (Michelle) Jakeman Jr. and their family, grandchildren Trice, Tori and Trigg, all of Fort Dodge, stepson Dean Dornath (Stacey) of Fort Dodge and their family, Keaton (Gabriel) of Austin, TX, Emma Dornath of Orlando, FL and Tanner Weinzetl of Fort Dodge, his brother Phil (Carolyn) Jakeman of Eminence, MO and sister-in-law Sara Jakeman of Portage, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Frances and his brother Jon Jakeman.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
