Eileen Alig

Eileen K. Alig, 97, died Friday, August 22, at home surrounded by family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Manson. Rosary for Eileen will be held at 3:30 PM on Wednesday at the Weishaar Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, at the Gunderson Funeral Home Weishaar Chapel in Manson, with a prayer to follow.

Eileen was born at home June 18, 1928, to the parents of Gerd & Katherine (Janssen) Hartman. She was educated in rural Pocahontas County Bellevue Township #5 until 8th grade. She graduated from Palmer High School in 1946. She continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught country school for 2 years. She married Maurice W. Alig January 18, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pocahontas, IA. She was a homemaker until 1966.

Eileen worked for the Good Samaritan Society until 1980 in Pocahontas and Manson. At the age of 81, she received the 2009 National Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA) Award in Sioux Falls, SD, and retired a year later. Quotes from family members of residents commented “Eileen is never rushed when working with residents. Her beaming smile and contagious laughter help her to communicate with residents regardless of their cognitive state.”

Eileen was a member of the Amvets Auxiliary, St. Joseph Catholic Church Altar Society until 1998 when the church closed. She loved gardening, cards, family, jigsaw puzzles, baking and attending library (book club) every Wednesday.

Eileen is survived by her children: Marvin Alig, Betty (Alig) Sweet, Kenny (Betty) Alig, Steve (Lex) Alig, David Alig and Sandy (Bruce) Dittmer; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Melvin; sister Elsie and sister-in-law Marlys Hartman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter Cathy, son-in-law Steve Sweet, great-grandson Garrett, brothers Richard and Earl Hartman, sister Anna Wallace, brother-in-law Robert Wallace and sister-in-law Rozella (Booge) Hartman.
