George Savery

George Willis Savery, born October 8, 1929, in Denison, Iowa, passed away July 24, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, from 9-10:15 AM at First Presbyterian Church with Services at 11 AM. Military Honors and interment will be held at North Lawn Cemetery after services. A man of deep faith, strong character, and unwavering patriotism, George lived a full and meaningful life devoted to family, service, and storytelling. After graduating from high school, where he worked at the Dr Pepper bottling company operated by his father, George enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at the naval base in Pearl Harbor. His dedication to his fellow veterans continued for decades as a proud member of the American Legion for 51 years, including time as Past Commander of Post #130. George worked for Crouse Cartage Company for 45 years, retiring in 1993. He was a dedicated leader and community member, serving as Past President of the Fort Dodge Noon Lions Club, and was actively involved in PICA (Pride in Community Appearance). In 1950, George married his high school sweetheart, LaDonna Schwanz. Together they shared 53 beautiful years of marriage and raised two children, Kathy and Garrett. During their time in Fort Dodge, George became a beloved figure to many as a bus driver and chaperone for the Fort Dodge Lanciers. Affectionately nicknamed “George of the Jungle.” Following LaDonna’s passing in 2002, George found love again and married Donna Levine in 2004.

George is survived by his wife, Donna Levine, and her children Steve (Joy) Levine and their children Elayna and Jonas, and Susan Levine; daughter Kathy Blome; son Garrett (Brenda) Savery. He was known lovingly as Papa George to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a proud grandfather to Courtney (Terry) Friest, Jon (Nicole) Hager, Chris (Abby) Blome, and Ellie (David) Urlaub. His legacy continues through his 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Richard of Pella. George was preceded in death by his first wife, LaDonna in 2002, his parents Arthur and Pearl (Baer) Savery, two sisters, and two brothers and his son in law Mike Blome. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be left to the discretion of the family.
