Jane Ortmeyer, 103, died peacefully in her sleep on September 14, 2024, in Bethesda, Maryland.
Jane is survived by her children Mary Martin of Birmingham, AL, Thomas (Ann) Ortmeyer of Potsdam, NY, and Nancy (David) Kuhn of Bethesda, MD; six grandchildren, Elizabeth (Stephen), Rachel (Sebastien), Corrine, Karl (Shanna), Emily and William; and six great-grandchildren, Courtley, Gabriella, Mael, Amy, Lyla and John. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 75 years, Howard, her son William, sister Ruth and her parents.
Jane was born on Valentines Day, February 14, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa, to William and Ruth Albright. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell College in 1943 with additional graduate studies in special education. She married Howard Ortmeyer, her college sweetheart, in October 1945 after he returned from serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
Jane taught mathematics and special education in the public schools of Wapello and Humboldt, Iowa during her nearly 40 year career in education. She lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa for several decades where she was active in the community, particularly P.E.O. International, an organization whose mission is to help women around the world advance through education. At age 88, Howard and Jane moved from Fort Dodge to Gaithersburg and later Bethesda, Maryland, to be close to their daughter Nancy, grandchildren Elizabeth, Emily and William and great-grandchildren.
Jane was a dedicated member of United Methodist and Presbyterian churches throughout her life.
