Lucille was born July 27, 1929, to Gust and Esther (Swalin) Olson of Pomeroy, Iowa. She graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1947, earned a teaching certificate from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, then taught in Sherman Township country schools.

She married high school sweetheart James (Jim) Tscherter on March 31, 1950. Two daughters, Sue Haworth and Vicki (Thomas) Elsen, were born to this union as they resided in varied locations in Nebraska and Iowa. Lucille’s marriage to Jim ended in divorce in 1979, but they remained friends. She married Harvey Berner on July 20, 1991, at Our Savior United Methodist Church in Manson, Iowa, welcoming his adult children Colleen (Chuck) McClue, Diane Berner, and Duane (Melinda) Berner and their families into her own. Lucy and Harvey enjoyed life and each other for over 26 years.

She was lovingly referred to as “Grandma Lucy” by her grandchildren Bethany (Thomas) Kinman, Brenna (William) Lambert, Brent (Regina) Elsen, and Scott Haworth. Great-grandchildren Gavin, Jackson, Gage, Benjamin, Brielle, Addisyn, and Aubree adored her and were a constant source of pride and joy from their first arrival until her last days.

Lucille’s life was a testimony of service to her family, church and community. She worked hard and sacrificed tirelessly to benefit her family, always with a smile and joyful attitude. Lucy stood strong in adversity, spoke up for injustice, and always advocated for children. In retirement, Lucy helped establish a community butterfly garden, danced often to perfect her waltz and two-step, enjoyed Sunday evening Karl King Band concerts, music and sporting events, and Senior Center meals and fellowship. She loved bargains, collecting many “treasures” from garage sales and auctions. She entered Good Samaritan Society – Manson at age 88. She moved to Good Samaritan Society – Holstein in 2021 to be closer to family.

She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, brothers LeRoy and Allan, husband Harvey, grandson Jason Bruning, Jim Tscherter, son-in-law Roger Haworth and other Olson, Tscherter and Berner family. She will be forever loved and remembered by her children, step-children and their families; siblings Eileen Bell, Harold (Virginia) Olson, Jean (David) Peterson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Good Samaritan Society – Manson, Good Samaritan Society – Holstein or your local Alzheimer’s organization.
