Everett (Bud) Pierce

Everett (Bud) Pierce passed away at home in Crosslake, MN on July 31, 2024 after several years of health struggles – he was 83-years-old. He left behind his wife of 60 years, Jan (Larson); daughter Amanda (Rick Bensman); son Matt (Tina Schilawski Pierce); son Doug; daughter Jane (Adam Johnson); and grandchildren Graham, Owen, Wren, and Lake.

Bud was born in Fort Dodge, IA to Everett and Gertrude Pierce and is survived by his siblings Andy (Barb); Jon (Janet); Roy (Diane); Sue Sudbrock (Bill); and Julie Reeks (Bob), as well as all of their children.

Bud’s children grew up hearing the old cliche of how he walked to school every day – despite the weather – and never missed a single day, which turned out to be true. He believed in the importance of a good education and strong work ethic, was his high school’s senior class president, and earned a full athletic scholarship to Iowa State University, where he held swimming records for many years. He was also a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He had a professional career that culminated with over 20 years at McLaughlin Body Company in Moline, IL, serving as president until he retired.

Bud was deeply loved by his family and will be forever missed. He left behind an astounding legacy of kindness, good humor, quiet leadership, and love. Bud’s family meant more to him than anything and he was a doting husband and father, always there to offer support, advice, and understanding. He was stern when needed and quite funny – especially when he wasn’t trying to be – and often had a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. Bud delighted in time with his kids, their partners, and grandkids, and was always ready to play cards and cribbage, go fishing and on boat rides, play pool, take day trips to explore new and favorite places, and so much more. We all have our unique memories and stories of him – he appreciated all of his loved ones for who they are. He was an avid reader and particularly loved westerns (especially Louis L’Amour), greatly enjoyed western movies and British crime mysteries, and could often be found doing sudoku.

In lieu of a funeral, per his wishes, Bud’s family will gather for a private memorial to celebrate his life with stories, laughter, and tears. If you would like to honor Bud’s memory, please do so by making a donation to the Iowa State University Athletic Department (swimming) or their athletic scholarships at https://tinyurl.com/yc2skwbj or 866-419-6768.
