Maynard Bernard Wiemers was born on December 21, 1929, to Mike and Anna (Schoon) Wiemers in rural Pocahontas County. He attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1947. In 1950, Maynard enlisted in the U.S. Navy, much of his time was spent in the Mediterranean on the USS Worcester. The last 6 months of his enlistment were spent in Washington, D.C. where he was on the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.

On April 6, 1952, he was united in marriage with Marlys Gerdes at Lizard Township Church near Palmer. They were married for 69 years until her passing in 2021. They farmed for many years in the Gilmore City area. Along with farming he had many other interests and businesses, including Wiemers Hatchery where he hatched and raised ducks, geese and game birds.

Later he shared his daughter’s love of planting and growing plants and trees, starting Oaks Garden Spot in Dakota City and later Oaks Nursery in Gilmore City. After retiring from all these ventures, he shared his son’s interest in going to auctions and flea markets and collecting Minneapolis Moline Tractors. He now has many sheds full of his collectables.

Maynard also took time to enjoy life with Marlys as they spent a lot of time polka dancing and camping on the Mississippi River. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Gilmore City and was a former member of the American Legion and Lions Club.

Left to cherish Maynard’s memory are his son, Steven (Deni) Wiemers of Gilmore City; daughter, Barb Kirkpatrick (Steve Benjamin) of Calmar; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; two great-great step grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Gerdes of Fort Dodge.
