Donald Zahrobsky was born August 25, 1936, the oldest of 5 children of Edward and Helen (Eastman) Zahrobsky. He attended Douglas Township No. 8 Country School and in 1954 graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High and later from Fort Dodge Junior College (ICCC). He served nine years in the Iowa Army National Guard. On June 6, 1959, Don was united in marriage to Marjorie Shinn. The couple made their home on the farm and their nearest neighbors were the Steve and Marguerite Powers family. When Powers retired Don was asked to farm their land; that same land is now being farmed by Powers’ grandson, over 60 years of farming friendship. Don worked as a camera man for the Fort Dodge TV Station until a tornado destroyed the studio in 1977.
Donald enjoyed collecting toy tractors, going out to the shop and time on the farm.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marjorie; his daughter Marcia (Kenny) Wasmund of Surprise, AZ; granddaughter Alyssa Wasmund; his siblings Leon (Gloria) Zahrobsky, Betty Pickel, Eileen (Ed) Olson; 6 nieces and one nephew. Don was preceded in death by his brother Roy, his brother-in-law Wilbert Pickel, and his parents Edward and Helen Zahrobsky.
In lieu of flowers, in recognition of the many abandoned animals left by their farm place, memorials may be directed to Almost Home.
