Roy N. Dillon, 92, of Fort Dodge, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Friendship Haven.
A service honoring Roy's life will be held at the First Presbyerian Church Saturday April 1st at 10:30 am. A military burial will be held at the North Lawn Cemetery, where the Iowa Army National Guard will present military honors. A reception will follow at the Christian Life Center at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church.
Roy Noll Dillon, the son of Roy E. and Florence (Noll) Dillon, was born May 27, 1930, in Fort Dodge. Growing up he had many part-time jobs. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1949 participating on the football, track, and basketball teams; he then attended Fort Dodge Junior College. On September 21, 1951, Roy was united in marriage to Carol Bracken. Roy served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1948 to 1970, retiring at the rank of Major. Beginning in 1949, he was employed at Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric for 43 years until retiring in 1992.
Roy is survived by his wife of 71 years Carol; his children, Wade Dillon (Sharlene), The Villages, FL, Annette Julson (Don Miller), Duncombe; and Tom Dillon, Elizabeth, CO; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Donita Bowers, son-in-law Mic Julson and daughter-in-law Rhonda Dillon.
Roy was a ruling elder at Westminster Presbyterian church and was instrumental in the drive to build a new church on NE 29th ST and welcomed new families from the adjoining neighborhood. In 1993, Westminster merged their congregation with First Presbyterian Church; he served on the Session, Church Foundation, and several committees including working on wheelchair ministry. He was a member of the Fort Dodge Planning and Zoning Commission from 1982-2007, Jaycee's, Elks Club, Golden Kiwanis and a charter member and past president of the Fort Dodge Rifle & Pistol Club. Throughout the years he volunteered his time as a Boy Scout leader; the YMCA serving on several campaign funds, assisting with coaching, and instructing hunter safety and rifle marksmanship; Trinity Regional Hospital RSVP; Gas & Electric Credit Union, and assisting with 4-H. The family has many memories of the road trip vacations he planned and took during the summers when he was not at National Guard Camp.
During retirement Roy installed Lifelines, volunteered at the hospital and drove a route for a financial institution between Fort Dodge and Rockwell City. He and his wife, Carol enjoyed traveling and spending time during the winter in Rockport, TX. He enjoyed playing golf, was active in Golden Kiwanis and read extensively.
Roy was a man of integrity and devoted his life to his family, the community and God. He will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew him.
