DARLENE M. ASKELAND

A service honoring Darlene’s life will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 4, at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dan Kahl officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Darlene is survived by her son Cal (Bev) Askeland, Rock Island, IL; daughters-in-law, Liz Askeland, Fort Dodge; and Laura Askeland, Mesa, AZ; seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, her sons, Rod and Brian, and her siblings, Elvira, Vernon (Pete), Clifford, and JoAnn.

Darlene Marion Askeland, the daughter of Gerd and Minnie Ihnen, was born March 29, 1933, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She attended country school near Palmer and graduated from high school. In 1952, Darlene was united in marriage to Oscar Askeland at Palmer. They farmed for a short time, and she later worked at a manufacturing facility in Fort Dodge.

Darlene enjoyed baking, shopping, collecting music boxes and spending time with her husband, Oscar. She liked to play cards, go bowling and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Darlene treasured time spent watching her grandchildren in their activities.
