Mary Jane Oppedahl, 98, longtime resident of Friendship Haven, and formerly of Ottosen and Humboldt, entered heaven on Dec. 20, 2021. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021 at 11:00 am at Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Mary was born on May 1, 1923, in Algona, IA, to Eugene and Mary Bacon Hofius. She attended Ottesen High School, where she played womens basketball. One year her team was part of the Girls State Basketball Tournament. After graduation she studied Secretarial and Accounting at Tobin. On March 20, 1942, she married Knut E. Oppedahl at the Presbyterian church in Ottosen. Joining Knut as he entered the war efforts, Mary worked in Kaiser Boat Building Company in Vancouver, WA. She returned to Iowa when her son was born. After the war, the couple farmed in rural Ottesen where two more sons were born. Later Mary worked for Bode State Bank and Humboldt County REC until retirement. After retirement the couple traveled frequently and wintered in Mission, TX.
She is survived by her sons, Knut (Kathie) of Cedar Rapids, IA and Jim of Rock Island, IL; daughter in law, Chris Oppedahl of Boone, IA; grandchildren, Katherine Tone, Karol White, Kevin (Terri) Oppedahl, Jeff (Angie) Oppedahl, and Greg (Jenny) Oppedahl; great grandchildren, Austin Tone, Annaleise Tone, Kelsey White, Christopher Oppedahl, Wyatt Oppedahl, Sinclair Oppedahl, Madesen Oppedahl, Joplin (Zach Kochel) Bittle and Dalton (Sadie Carlson) Oppedahl; great great grandson, Bentley Kochel; brother in law, Richard (Annette) Oppedahl of Durham, NC and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Eugenia Lee; her husband; son, Roger; three brothers in law; and three sisters in law.
Mary loved family, Cubs games, all Iowa basketball games, bridge, golf, needlework, and Bible studies.
Special appreciation to all the staff at Friendship Haven and Trinity Regional Medical Center for their dedicated care.
