DEACON DAN CARNEY
Deacon Dan Carney, 77, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, November 22, 2021, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 21st at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
Deacon Dan Carney was born June 2, 1944, in Oakland, CA to Donald and Gertrude Carney while his father was stationed in the Navy during WWII. The family then relocated to Fort Dodge upon his father’s honorable discharge from the Navy.
Deacon Dan graduated from St. Edmond High School in 1962. He attended Conception Seminary College in Conception, MO from the years 63-65, transferred to Creighton University, Omaha, NE and graduated in 1966.
Dan and Mary Fraher were married August 27, 1966. Together, they had three children: Jeanne, Christine, and Jim.
Upon graduating from college, Dan began working at Carney’s Auto Salvage. In 1986, he started his own business, Lenders and Insurers Auto Auction in Des Moines, IA. He continued his auto-auction business until his retirement. He began his studies for the Diaconate for the Sioux City Diocese and was ordained a Catholic Deacon June 9, 2012. He served at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fort Dodge until his death.
Deacon Dan loved his family, his friends, cars, and cigars. He always facilitated and celebrated the success of others.
Survivors that get to tell all the Deacon Dan stories include: his wife, Mary; children, Jeanne (Brian) Westphal of Litchfield, MN; Chris Carney of Fort Dodge; Jim (Kelli) Carney Dubuque, IA; brother, Pat (Diane) Carney Key West, FL grandchildren, Justin (Amanda) Johnson, Clive, IA; Kate Westphal, Austin, MN; Maddy Westphal (Joe Holdvogt); Coldspring, MN; Keeley Carney, Chicago, IL and Chloe Carney, Dubuque, IA. Great-grandchildren: Addison and Riley Johnson; Clive, IA; and Sloan and Hawkin Westphal, Austin, MN numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
As Deacon Dan would say, “Let the Good times Roll!”
