ROBERT SILKE

BOONE — Robert Earl Silke was born on August 8, 1925, to Emma and Benjamin Silke in Alden, Iowa.

Growing up Bob was active in all sports through his high school years. At age eighteen, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. As a Sergeant, he served active duty from 1943 to 1946 in Japan. After returning from the war he attended Drake University and achieved his BS and MS in math education. He married Pauline May Johannsen on June 18, 1950. His love of teaching math and coaching sports led him to Thayer, Parkersburg, Audubon, and Fort Dodge, Iowa. He ended his teaching career at Iowa Central Community College where he taught math and then became the Financial Aid Director.

Throughout his life he enjoyed sports, fishing, and family activities.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and wife. Survivors include daughter, Janet Westrum, and son, James Silke of Boone; three grandchildren, Jonathan Silke of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nathan Westrum of Boone, and Emily Westrum of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Bob will be missed by many including family, friends, and former students. He was a man of God, a good teacher, coach, and mentor.
