ROY “SMITTY” SMITH

Roy “Smitty” Smith, 93, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the Fort Dodge Health and Rehab in Fort Dodge. Memorial services will be 2:30 PM on Saturday January 16, 2021 at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel with full military honors conducted by the United States Marines and the VFW Post #1856. A time of gathering for family and friends will be from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM on Saturday at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Roy is survived by his two children, Tami Anderson (Marc McCulloch) and Doug (Heather) Smith all of Fort Dodge; five grandchildren, McKenzie, Ty, Zach, Erika and Valerie and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Beulah “Bobby” Lieberknecht, Dorothy Alcorn, Mary Smith and Fern Dzuris.

Roy “Smitty” V. Smith, the son of John and Zola (DeMoss) Smith, was born May 9, 1927 in Sutherland, Iowa and graduated from Calumet High School in Calumet, Iowa. On September 7, 1945, Smitty enlisted into the United States Marines Corps and served during WWII. He was stationed in San Diego until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1946. After his time in the military, Smitty returned to Iowa where he made his home in Madrid. In 1957, he married Doris “Dori” Groves. They later divorced. Smitty sold heavy equipment as well as farm equipment. He owned Carlson Inc. in Fort Dodge. He was a past member of the Elks Club and lived at Northridge Apartments for 20 years.
