BERNIECE E. NOWACK

POCAHONTAS — Berniece E. Nowack, age 91, of Pocahontas, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at the Pocahontas Manor in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m Saturday, November 28, 2020, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Iowa, with Pastor John Mayer officiating. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery near Havelock, Iowa. There will be no visitation.

Berniece Emma Jaeschke was born November 6, 1929, in Lohrville, Iowa. She was the oldest of three children of August and Helen (Fromm) Jaeschke. She attended country school (Reading #8), graduated from Lohrville High School in 1947 and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1949. After graduation she taught in Havelock, Iowa, where she met her future husband. On October 22, 1950, she married A. Francis Nowack at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Farnhamville, IA.

She later taught as a primary teacher or a substitute teacher in other Iowa communities including LuVerne, Newell-Providence, and Denver for 28 years; and a teacher associate in Pocahontas for 15 years before retiring; she worked for 13 years as a CNA/Med Aide at Pocahontas Residential Care Center.

She enjoyed teaching with the added bonus of being paid for something she loved doing. She also used this skill in her church as a teacher and a Sunday school superintendent, a private tutor, and as an art teacher through the Denver summer recreation program. She served as a chaperone for the girls’ basketball teams when her husband coached, and even sewed all of the first uniforms for the high school girls’ track team. Her interests were many including reading, traveling, gardening, organizing family reunions including talent shows, submitting articles for different magazines she subscribed, serving as a charter member of the Genealogical Society, actively involved in many areas of her church and the Garden Club, and served as both a Den and Girl Scout leader. She was known for her recycling long before it was emphasized and she was always ready with a fresh pan of brownies or a homemade pie for someone new in the neighborhood or those in need. She especially enjoyed her family and their activities.

Berniece is survived by 7 children: David (Gloria) Nowack of Jefferson, MO, Sandra (Mark) Hoffman of Centerville, IA, Steven Nowack of Denver, IA, Cheryl Nowack of Excelsior Springs MO, Debra (Brian) Parrott of Iowa City, IA, Angela (Roger) Reed of Ruthven, IA, and Philip (Sarah) Nowack of Fort Atkinson, IA; a brother-in-law Gaylord (Rose) Nowack of Denver, IA and many nephews and nieces; 12 grandchildren: Jennifer, Jacqueline, Abigail, Amber, Ashley, Austin, Olivia, Lindsey, Grace, Chelsey, Caleb, and Caitlyn; 13 great-grandchildren: Brittany, Elijah, Isaiah, Kinsley, Delaney, Logan, Hadley, Greyson, Klaus, Kael, Wrenley, Ella and Callie, and 3 great-great-grandchildren: Landon, Jase, and Izaiah.
