JACK PORTER

Jack Porter, 81, former Fort Dodger died November 15, 2019 in San Francisco from complications after a fall. Jack was born in Fort Dodge to Gretchen Smith & Thomas B. Porter. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1956 and the University of Iowa in 1960.

After graduation Jack joined the US Army and served in Germany, Ethiopia and Australia. Subsequently he was employed by the Department of Defense for the US Government. His first assignment was in Washington D.C. and in the 1970’s he moved to San Francisco where he worked for the US Government at Lockheed Martin in Cupertino California.

Upon retiring in 1993, Jack volunteered for many organizations. At the center of his heart was establishing the National Aids Memorial in Golden Gate Park with the help of a few other key individuals. Jack was a board member and spent countless hours volunteering at “The Grove” for 30 years. Jack also loved visiting with his classmates from the class of ’56 and enjoyed traveling throughout his retirement. Everyone that knew Jack, felt his warmth and caring, along with his zest for life and he will certainly be missed.

Jack is survived by his sister Jill Porter (Chet) of Fort Dodge, niece Elizabeth Hegedus (Jordan), and nephews Dan Gutknecht (Marla), Cory Lang (Carol), Scott Lang (Kaylene), and good friends Cooper Marcus (Angela) and Lucy Marcus. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Ann Hill, and partner Stephen Marcus.

A memorial will be held at a later date.
