PHYLLIS VASBINDER

Phyllis Vasbinder, 98, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, died Oct­ober 29, 2019 at the Taylor House hospice, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Private fam­ily grave­side services were held at North Lawn Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date in the spring of 2020. Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services is entrusted with the arrangements.

Phyllis Mary Gashel, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Hamilton) Gashel, was born October 24, 1921. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1940 and attended Hamilton Business College. On June 22, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to Wade Vasbinder in Mason City. The couple later moved to Fort Dodge in 1950. She was employed as an office secretary and computer operator for Baker Wholesale Manufacturing & Plumbing. Phyllis was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed spending time with family, volunteering, playing cards and, since 2007, being part of the Friendship Haven family.

Survivors include her daughters: Katherine “Kay” Ann (John) Marshall of Richardson, TX; Mary Ellen (Marv) Wood of Altoona, Iowa; and Carol Marie Vasbinder of Escondido, CA; her grandchildren Scott Marshall, Jeff Marshall, Joel Wood, Laura Buffington and Allison Wood; great-grandchildren Donovan Buffington, Athena Marshall, Fiona Wood, and Aubrey Greenwood.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Wade, in 2008; her grandson, Jonathan Wood, her sister Frances Werth and her parents.

Memorials may be directed towards Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
