WILLIAM LEE WOODRUFF
William (Bill) Lee Woodruff, born to Leonard and Georganne (Halverson) Woodruff on November 29, 1963 in Fort Dodge, died Tuesday morning, July 17, 2018 in Sacramento, CA. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Christ Community Church, 5501 George Washington Carver Ave, Ames, IA from 3pm to 4pm, with fellowship following from 4pm to 5pm. A private family burial will occur at a later time. After attending Duncombe Elementary school, North Junior High, he graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1982, Bill attended Iowa Central Community College, playing football for Paul Shupe, later to enjoy rousing cribbage games with Coach Shupe upon returning to Fort Dodge. He then received his BS in Civil Engineering at Valparaiso University. After graduation, Bill joined the Peace Corps, stationed in Honduras, then on to Woodruff Construction, LLC, where he was to be last employed as CEO.
During Bill’s career, he was involved in many organizations. Among them, he was founding member of the Creative Artist Studios in Ames (CASA), the Board of Directors for the Octagon Center for the Arts, Ames Economic Development Corporation, Ames Youth Soccer Club, community board at Wells Fargo, Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellow), Master Builders of Iowa, Associated Builders and Contractors of Iowa, Iowa Association of Construction training and the Fort Dodge Public Library. He was especially active in DBIA (Design Build Institute of America), where he received his DBIA designation, the distinguished Leadership Award for Design Build Institute of America, Mid-America Region. He served as DBIA Vice President and then President of DBIA Mid-American Region and the DBIA National Sustainability Committee. He was a graduate of Leadership Ames and Leadership Iowa. He attained a LEED AP designation. He also established the Woodruff Construction Scholarship at ISU for Construction Engineering students as Bill believed in philanthropy, giving to many causes throughout his life.
Bill enjoyed being active, with such hobbies as creating pottery, travel, golf, sailing, coaching his children in soccer, playing scrabble, cards or a riveting game of Risk, woodworking, his coffee group, racquetball, swimming and gardening. He enjoyed his time helping at Habitat for Humanity, utilizing his very capable handyman skills.
Bill married Nolvia Argentina Rodriguez Flores on November 25, 1989, residing in Fort Dodge, then moving to Ames, later to divorce. Bill married Nyla Calloway September 13, 2017.
Surviving Bill are his children from his marriage with Nolvia: Walter, Katharine, Peter and David; wife Nyla; parents Leonard and Georganne; siblings David, Anne, Laura, Tom and twin Don; 25 Nieces and nephews along with dog, Baylor.
