OTHO – Kathryn Buscherfeld Spurgeon of Otho, IA, formerly of Whittemore, IA was given the gift of life 91 years ago. Kathryn returned to the Lord on September 2, 2016 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. A rosary will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday and visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge. Burial will be in Saint Michael’s Catholic Cemetery north of Whittemore on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 2:30 PM.
Kathryn was born June 30, 1925 in Rodman, IA to the late Anthony and Anna (Elbert) Buscherfeld. She was one of 8 siblings raised in Rodman and Whittemore. Kathryn graduated from Presentation Academy. She was then united in marriage to Jack Spurgeon on February 2, 1944. Kathryn owned and operated J & K’s for 20 years in Whittemore. She then worked as a secretary at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church and School for many years. After moving to Fort Dodge, Kathryn was employed at Friendship Haven until she retired at the age of 87. Kathryn enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, sewing, working with plants, and most importantly spending time with family. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish, The Catholic Daughters, and The American Legion Auxiliary in Whittemore.
Kathryn is survived by her, daughter, Carolyn (Bill) Chelleen of Otho; grandchildren, Sara (Pat) Loehr of Burnside, IA, Matt (Regina) Chelleen of Farnhamville, IA and Suzanne (Jon) Duckett of Jefferson, IA; great grandchildren, Katie, Chelsey, Emera, Austin, Adriene, Karhyn, Haylee, Mattie, Abby, Paul, Joel, Koda, and Myia; brother, John Buscherfeld of Quincy, MA; sister, Mel Goman of Carlsbad, NM; sister-in-law’s, Norma Buscherfeld of Whittemore and Irene Buscherfeld of Algona, IA. Kathryn is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband, Alva ‘Jack’ Spurgeon; son, William ‘Billy” Spurgeon; and siblings, Edward ‘Bud’ Buscherfeld, Theresa Stella, Evelyn Donner, Margaret Lewis, James Buscherfeld and an infant sister.
