DENNIS SCHUMACHER
MALLARD – Dennis J. “Denny” Schumacher was born in the farmhouse located on the family farm near Mallard, the son of Louis and Hazel (Draman) Schumacher. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School and graduated from Mallard High School in 1947. Following his education, Denny managed the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army.
On February 16, 1953, Denny was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Vaughan in Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. For a few years, they farmed while Denny made his way into the construction industry. He and a business partner founded a lumber and construction company in Plover. In 1966, he and Mary Ellen adopted an infant son, Kevin. They went on to purchase and operate the Mallard Lumber Company where they were in the construction and lumber business for over 40 years. During this time they also purchased and managed the family farm.
Denny served on a number of boards including two terms on the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors; the Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Corn & Soybean and Northwest Agency on Aging boards. He was a township trustee, and Denny was very active in St. Mary’s Parish in Mallard where he was a member of the council, parish director, lector and extra-ordinary Eucharistic minister for many years. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and long time Commander of the Anderson-Eckert- Hersom Post #345 of the American Legion in Mallard.
On Monday, September 30, 2013, Denny passed away at his home.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen; one son, Kevin and his wife, Taletha “Talli” of Trinity, NC; one grandson, Joseph “Joey” Schumacher of Trinity, NC; his sister, Maxine Wilson and her husband, Bruce of Emmetsburg; two brothers: Richard “Dick”, and his wife, Ann of Benicia, CA and Maurice of San Jose, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Louis and two sisters: Pearl Molacek and Dorothy Suss.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m, Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard. Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m.
