Man faces drunk driving charge after serious crash

A Fort Dodge man faces criminal charges because police say he wrecked his SUV while driving drunk early Saturday morning, seriously injuring the passenger in the vehicle.

Yorbelis Torres Creagh, 25, of 230 Fifth Ave. N., was arrested by Fort Dodge police and charged with:

∫ Operating while under the influence, second offense

∫ Serious injury by vehicle

∫ Failure to maintain control

The crash happened at 2:53 a.m. Saturday on a steep hill in the 100 block of North Fifth Street. According to the criminal complaints filed against him, Torres Creagh was driving a 2006 Honda Pilot which went off the road and struck a tree. The passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries.

Police reported that Torres Creagh had watery, bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath. Officers said his balance was also impaired. His preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol content above .08, which is the level at which someone is presumed to be drunk under Iowa law.

Torres Creagh waived his right to a preliminary hearing on the operating while under the influence and serious injury by vehicle charges. That means the case against him will proceed to arraignment and trial.

Court action on the less serious offense of failure to maintain control was postponed for 180 days.
