Multiple charges filed in shooting incident

A Fort Dodge man accused of firing a couple of gunshots during an argument Wednesday evening faces multiple criminal charges.

According to court records, Miguel A. Vazquez, 23, is charged with:

∫ Intimidation with a dangerous weapon

∫ Going armed with intent

∫ Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon

∫ Possession or carrying of a dangerous weapon while under the influence

∫ Assault causing bodily injury or mental illness

The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. at 720 B St. According to the criminal complaints filed against him, during an argument with two or three other people, Vazquez brandished a handgun. He hit a man with the gun and pointed it at a woman before firing two rounds into the ground, according to the criminal complaints.

Fort Dodge police and Webster County sheriff’s deputies responded and took Vazquez into custody at the scene of the shooting.

He was found to have a blood alcohol content of .091, which led to the charge of possession or carrying of a dangerous weapon while under the influence. A blood alcohol content of .08 is the level at which a person is presumed to be drunk under Iowa law.

Vazquez made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Thursday morning.

Magistrate Brandy R. Lundy scheduled a preliminary hearing for Dec. 26. She set bond for Vazquez at $19,000 cash or surety.

Assault — Merlin L. Platt Jr., 51, Manson, trial set for Jan. 21, no contact order issued.

Fifth degree theft — Sean D. Powers, 36, 319 N. 11th St., continued until Monday. Ryan A. Rodgers, 40, Webster City, failed to appear, arrest warrant issued.
