More charges filed

in child abuse case

A Fort Dodge man accused of hitting his baby faces a revised and even longer list of criminal charges, according to court records.

Those records show that Austin N. Prewiit, 24, of 315 Haskell St., is now charged with these offenses:

∫ 18 counts of child endangerment, torture or cruelty causing bodily injury

∫ 18 counts of assault causing bodily injury or mental illness

∫ Three counts of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person.

Fort Dodge police wrote in criminal complaints filed against Prewitt that he knowingly struck a child under 1 year of age with an object on multiple occasions between Oct. 21, 2024, and Sept. 11, 2025.

He was arrested earlier this month and was initially charged with 21 counts of child endangerment, bodily injury.

Prewitt was jailed on a $210,000 cash only bond.The next step in the judicial process for him is an arraignment scheduled for Monday.

The baby’s mother, Rebekah Prewitt, 23, also of 315 Haskell St., was arrested and charged with 15 counts of child endangerment, bodily injury. She was jailed on a $150,000 cash only bond.

Plea deal reached

in FD drug case

A man charged with using bogus prescriptions to buy oxycodone from a Fort Dodge pharmacy has reached a plea bargain with prosecutors, court records show.

Nicholas L. Hackbarth, 23, of Webster City, was arrested Aug. 26 and charged with two counts of prescription drug violation, obtain by false premise and two counts of intent to manufacture/distribute controlled substance.

According to criminal complaints filed against him by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Hackbarth went to the Hy-Vee Pharmacy at 115 S. 29th St on May 24 and May 31 and used fictitious prescriptions to obtain oxycodone hydrochloride.

Under the agreement with prosecutors, Hackbarth will plead guilty to one count of intent to manufacture/deliver controlled substance. All other charges will be dropped.

The court records show he will receive three years of probation. A 10-year prison sentence and a $1,000 fine will be suspended.
