Humboldt County man sent to federal prison on gun charge

A Bode man is headed to federal prison for eight years after pleading guilty to a gun crime, prosecutors reported.

Lawrence Moore, 37, pleaded guilty in April to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa. Prosecutors say he had a handgun stuffed in a mattress in his home.

U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced him to 96 months in prison on Sept 4.

According to prosecutors, Moore was convicted of armed robbery and three counts of aggravated battery in Illinois. That makes him ineligible to have any firearms or ammunition.

In the fall of 2024, Moore communicated with an undercover agent about buying or trading firearms, according to the Attorney’s Office. On Nov. 18, 2024, law enforcement officers searched Moore’s home. They found a loaded Smith & Wesson Model 59 handgun inside a void cut into a mattress, prosecutors said.

Moore is in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, awaiting transfer to a federal prison.
