FD man sent to federal prison on gun charge

A Fort Dodge man has been sentenced to a little more than seven years in federal prison for firing a gun last year in the city, according to prosecutors.

Michael Turner, 35, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa reported.

U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Turner to 87 months in prison plus two years of supervised release following the imprisonment.

Turner remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The gunfire incident occurred at 2:08 p.m. March 8, 2024, in the 1800 block of First Avenue South. No one was injured.

On March 29, 2024, Turner was stopped by police and found to be in possession of a .45 caliber Glock pistol. Ballistics evidence revealed that it was the weapon used in the March 8 shooting, according to the attorney’s office.

Turner was arrested on April 1, 2024, and charged with the state offenses of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and dominion or control of a firearm by a felon. The case against him was later moved to federal court.
