Woman charged with using van as a weapon enters plea

A Fort Dodge woman who police say hit another woman with her van last summer has entered a guilty plea in an agreement that will enable her to avoid serving time behind bars.

Stephanie I. Koziol, 40, pleaded guilty to assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, according to court documents.

She will be sentenced to one year of probation, and ordered to pay an $855 civil penalty along with court costs and attorney fees, court documents indicate. She will receive a deferred judgement, which means if she successfully completes her probation and pays all ordered amounts she will not have a criminal record.

The incident happened at 9:30 a.m.July 27 in the 900 block of 14th Street Southwest.

According to criminal complaints filed against her, Koziol was heading south in a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van when she spotted another woman who was walking along that street. She got into an argument with that woman and told her she would hit her with the van. She then struck the victim with the van.

The impact threw the victim about 10 feet, according to the criminal complaint. She suffered hip and leg injuries.

Koziol’s guilty plea was accepted by District Associate Judge Joseph L. Tofilon. He set a sentencing hearing for Jan. 6.
