FD man sentenced
for federal gun charge
A Fort Dodge man will spend eight months in federal prison for lying while buying a gun, according to prosecutors.
Hunter Collier, 22, pleaded guilty in April to making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa reported.
This week, U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Collier to eight months in prison and two years of supervised release following his prison term.
In July 2022, Collier purchased a .380 ACP pistol from a federally-licensed firearms dealer in Fort Dodge. At that time, he asserted that he was buying the gun for himself and that he did not use marijuana, according to the attorney’s office. Prosecutors say he bought the gun for someone else and that he does use marijuana.
Collier bought two more guns in Des Moines the day after he bought the handgun in Fort Dodge, the Attorney’s Office reported.
The case was investigated by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
