Driver sent to hospital after crash

Fort Dodge firefighters get a cot out of an ambulance as they prepare to transport a patient from the scene of a crash Wednesday afternoon in the 3500 block of Fifth Avenue South. According to Fort Dodge Police Lt. Matt Wilson, Myron Groat, of Fort Dodge, was driving a Chrysler Town and Country van eastbound of Fifth Avenue South when he swerved across the road and hit a utility pole. The van came to rest facing east next to the westbound lane. The top half of the utility pole broke and fell to the ground. Wilson said Groat may have suffered a medical problem right before the crash. He was transported to UnityPoint Health - Trinity Regional Medical Center. The Fort Dodge police and fire departments responded to the 12:56 p.m. crash.
