Algona man to serve 64 months for federal gun charges

Was found passed out with loaded weapons

ALGONA — An Algona man was sentenced to over five years in federal prison after being convicted of illegally possessing firearms.

James Patrick Murphy, 38, was sentenced to 64 months on July 30 after pleading guilty to two counts of being a felon, drug user and domestic abuse misdemeanant in possession of a firearm, and one count of possession of a stolen firearm, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa.

As a felon, domestic abuser and drug user, Murphy was precluded from legally possessing guns.

Murphy’s unlawful possession was discovered when law enforcement received a report of him appearing to be asleep behind the steering wheel of his pickup truck. As law enforcement officers approached Murphy’s truck, they observed an AR-15-style rifle and a semiautomatic pistol on the seat next to him.

In addition to those firearms, officers recovered a fully-loaded 20-round magazine, scope, Taurus pistol with a fully-loaded magazine and small bag of methamphetamine.

Following Murphy’s prison term, he must serve a three-year supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
