Insulation smolders at Dayton Elementary

DAYTON — A plumbing job at the Dayton Elementary School started some insulation smoldering Monday afternoon. The incident was reported at 1:34 p.m. and the building was evacuated. Dayton Fire Chief Luke Hainzinger said a worker was soldering a pipe inside a concrete wall and some insulation began smoldering. He said firefighters “put a little bit of water in the cavity of the concrete wall just to be on the safe side.” “There was no real fire damage,” he said. Hainzinger said he expected the building to be open as usual today.

A two-block stretch of South 12th Street has been closed temporarily. South 12th Street between Second and Fourth avenues south are closed for a storm sewer project. Detours have been posted.

Disaster recovery center to open in Humboldt County

HUMBOLDT — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will open a disaster recovery center at 1 p.m. today at the Humboldt County Secondary Roads facility at 2221 220th St. FEMA staff will be there to meet one-on-one with people who were affected by flooding in Humboldt County earlier this month. After today, the center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

Pocahontas man killed in crash

ALGONA — According to an accident report from the Iowa State Patrol, Adam Allen, 42, of Pocahontas will killed in a crash around 1 p.m. Sunday. Allen was traveling westbound on a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle on Iowa Highway 18 near 160th Avenue, east of Algona. A southbound 2024 Nissan Sentra entered the intersection without yielding at a stop sign. The 17-year-old driver of the Nissan is from Ackley and was not identified in the accident report.
