A woman faces a criminal charge in Webster County for allegedly failing to provide a horse with adequate food, water and shelter, according to court records.
Page E. Peterson, 18, of Wyoming, has been charged with animal neglect with injury, court records indicate. She is from a city in eastern Iowa named Wyoming.
In the criminal complaint filed against her, Webster County sheriff's deputies wrote that Peterson was responsible for caring for an Arabian horse named Kajia at a property on 225th Street. The horse was under her care from May 1 to July 29, they wrote.
However, deputies found that the horse's ribs, vertebrae and hip bones were visible through its fur. The horse also had an untreated wound in one of its left legs.
Peterson was arrested Tuesday in the 1300 block of Third Avenue Northwest. She made her initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Wednesday.
Peterson waived her right to a preliminary hearing, which means the case against her will proceed to arraignment and trial.
Magistrate William H. Habhab issued an order prohibiting her from having any pets.
