Man pleads guilty in Kossuth Co. pursuit
ALGONA — A man who led law enforcement officers on a vehicle pursuit in northern Kossuth County in January has entered a guilty plea that will apparently spare him from prison, according to court records.
Jose L. Renteria, 41, of Lakota, pleaded guilty to eluding, second or subsequent offense, court records show.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, he would be sentenced to a five-year prison term, which would be suspended, and four years of probation. He would also have to pay a $1,025 fine, plus any restitution. The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office has entered a claim of $2,684 for repairing a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle that was damaged in the pursuit.
The pursuit occurred on Jan. 30. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle near Lakota. The driver, later identified as Renteria, refused to stop and a pursuit ensued through Lakota and north on U.S. Highway 169. Renteria pulled into a driveway to an acreage about a mile north of Lakota and drove into a field. He then backed up into the Sheriff’s Office vehicle. He was then taken into custody.
In addition to the eluding offense, he was also initially charged with reckless driving, failure to obey a stop sign (two counts) and no valid driver’s license.
