A total of 29 dogs and puppies were seized Thursday at a rural Webster County property where sick and emaciated puppies had been previously found, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The animals were seized in the course of an investigation that began July 29 when Webster County Animal Protection, which provides animal control services, reported possible dog neglect at the site near Badger.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the initial report was of 25 dogs and puppies that were malnourished and had no veterinary care. Deputies reported that two of the puppies were given to Webster County Animal Protection and were taken to a veterinarian. The veterinarian found them to be emaciated and unhealthy. Their physical condition was rated as a two on a scale of one to nine.
On Thursday, deputies, accompanied by representatives of Webster County Animal Protection and the Iowa Animal Rescue League, went to the site with a search warrant and seized the animals.
The situation remains under investigation by sheriff's deputies.
