Churdan woman killed in crash

SIOUX CITY — A Churdan woman was killed in a crash in Sioux City Wednesday afternoon, not long after state troopers gave up their pursuit of her vehicle.

The Iowa State Patrol identified her as Melissa Thede, 40.

Another driver involved in the crash, 29-year-old Hector Alvarez Collazo, of Sioux City, suffered what troopers described as minor injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.

The State Patrol reported that Thede was spotted speeding and driving erratically in a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Troopers attempted to stop her and the pursuit continued into Sioux City. A State Patrol supervisor ordered a halt to the pursuit after it got into city traffic.

At 4:32 p.m. Thede crashed at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Spalding Street, according to the State Patrol.

Troopers said Thede’s vehicle slammed into the rear of a 2012 Ram 1500 pickup operated by Alvarez Collazo. The PT Cruiser then rolled and hit a 2018 Ford Edge operated by Traci Kellen, 36, of Sioux City. Kellen was uninjured.
