Eagle Grove crash causes big fuel spill

EAGLE GROVE — A large amount of diesel fuel spilled onto a section of Iowa Highway 17 when a car and a truck collided in Eagle Grove Thursday morning.

The car struck the side of the truck, puncturing one of its saddle tanks.

Eagle Grove firefighters plugged the leak in the tank and built a kind of small dam to prevent the fuel from going into storm drains.

The regional hazardous materials team from the Fort Dodge Fire Department was called to help with the cleanup. The team was dispatched at about 11:30 a.m.

Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said the team pumped about 100 gallons of diesel fuel out of the tank and into drums. Team members also spread absorbent material on the highway to pick up the spilled fuel.

The team was on the scene for about two hours.

The crash is under investigation by Eagle Grove police.

Starting at $4.94/week.
