Man arrested for lying about WC shooting
WEBSTER CITY — A man injured in a July 2 shooting is now facing criminal charges after police determined he shot himself and then falsely claimed someone else had shot him.
Webster City police identified the man as Cory Lee Joseph Cebula, 25.
Police reported that he has been arrested and charged with:
• Dominion or control of a firearm/offensive weapon by a felon
• False report of an indictable offense to a public entity
• Possession of a controlled substance (marijuana)
• Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine)
• Discharging weapons within city limits
• Possession of drug paraphernalia
At 6:49 p.m. July 2, police and VanDiest Medical Center paramedics were dispatched to 408 Grove St., where they found Cebula suffering from two gunshot wounds. He was treated and subsequently airlifted to a Des Moines hospital.
The investigation conducted over the following weeks revealed that Cebula had in fact shot himself and fabricated the story of being shot by an unknown assailant, Webster City police reported.
Hamilton County sheriff’s deputies and the Hamilton County Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
