Motor causes smoke problem at Iowa Central

An overheated electrical motor smoked up part of a building at Iowa Central Community College Wednesday evening.

The problem at the REC Center was reported at 6:50 p.m.

“There was a decent amount of smoke,” Fire Department Capt. Steve Teske said. “They heeded the fire alarm and evacuated the building. The security guards did a great job making sure everyone got out.”

Teske said the cause of the smoke was determined to be a big motor in a mechanical room which overheated and seized up. He said the motor reached temperatures of about 400 degrees.

Firefighters shut off the electrical power, then isolated the overheated motor. They also vented smoke from the building.

The Fort Dodge fire and police departments responded. Firefighters were on the scene until about 7:30 p.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
