Purdue Glee Club to perform in FD Saturday

The Purdue University Varsity Glee Club will perform a free concert in Fort Dodge on Saturday.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fort Dodge Middle School, 800 N. 32nd St.

The concert is sponsored by the Ann Smeltzer Charitable Trust.

Under the direction of William E. Griffel and Scott Hines, the club has 64 members.

Club members sing a wide range of musical styles,including gospel, vocal jazz, swing, contemporary hits, romantic ballads, classical choral selections, barbershop, folk melodies, patriotic standards, opera choruses, country and novelty tunes. Small groups and soloists enhance every performance.

Since it was established in 1893, the Varsity Glee Club has served as a musical ambassador for the West Lafayette, Indiana, university. The club averages 50 to 60 performances a year. It has performed throughout Europe, and also in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, China and South Africa.

In the United States, the club has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and at six presidential inaugurations.
